Housing Development

Stephenson way [ enlarge ]

The housing development of the Stephenson way area is well underway. The square in the estate is for the new senior school to be named after the Chairman of the local education authority and Director of S&I Ltd, Mr Samuel Lloyd.

The road going from the bottom right to meet with the road going across the photo from side to side is Occupation Road, meeting with Rockingham road.

At the bottom of the photo you can just make out the new water tower being built. Next to it is Pearts Farm, known locally as Pears Farm (because of its pear trees). Yet to be built; The Raven Hotel, Rockingham Road School, shops, The Welfare Club, The Church of Scotland.

An aerial view

A very interesting photograph. In the very centre of the photo is Bessemer Grove - the very first houses to be constructed for the workers. At the very top of the photo is the second part of the development - Kelvin Grove.

The observant among you may also notice the beginnings of the Stephenson Way Development across the road from Kelvin Grove. Other points of interest to the left of St Johns church is Church Street, which was demolished in the early 1960's.

The fields to the left of Bessemer Grove is now St James Industrial estate, and the fields above them (tree lined) are where the council built its first houses straight after the end of the second world war: South road, St Johns Place, Southall road, and to the far left of the photo, standing alone in a field, is Stone House.

All the properties to the right of Bessemer Grove, as far as the old Stanion Lane, have been demolished.
