About the Spirit of Corby
The Spirit of Corby sculpture was originally a lot larger than the section we re-erected in the town centre. It was situated in within an oblong pond in Queens Square. At one end, the section we have today sat on top of a large piece of Lime stone.
To the left of the pond was the second part of the sculpture - rising out of a ringed cobble stone base, three sections of stainless steel pointed straight into the sky. Holding them steady was more lime stone, which had been cut and moulded and placed a couple of feet apart along its length.
History
People living in Britain in the early 1930s, on the whole had never heard of Corby in Northamptonshire. It was a time of hardship. Millions were out of work and for many, the only meal of the day they had was supplied by the local soup kitchen.
That changed in 1933 when the Stewarts & Lloyds board of Directors anounnced they were going to build a new multi millon pound integrated steelworks and the small village of Corby had been chosen as the place it was going to be built. A new development this size was going to need men and plenty of them, and they came in there thousands from all over the country. A large contingent came to Corby from Scotland where a steel works had just closed down.
